The first artist that popped into my head was Mary Cassatt...I love her paintings of mothers with children...so precious. I also think highly of Monet. The colors he used in his paintings inspired by his waterlily garden are just lovely! Of course there is Van Gogh's Starry Night that I just love...and oh, there's Georgia O'Keefe too! lol!! Oh but wait...Vermeer's works are really, really good too...
OK, ok...I've picked just one! I'm going with George Seurat because of his original method of painting: pointillism! My favorite painting is called "Sunday Afternoon at the Grande Jatte". Very, very neat!!

Looks like you are an art lover yourself to be able to know so many painters. I only know the masters but the current crops of painters are relatively unknown to me. Thanks for your point of view. God bless.
Even though I love to look at Van Gogh's work and have always been drawn to him because of his sad life, I can say that he is my favorite, but not the greatest. That honor goes to Michelangelo, mainly because of his fresco of God creating Adam on the Cistine Chapel ceiling. That one picture leaves me more awestruck than any I've ever seen.
I absolutely love Jan Vermeer. His work is exquisite and he could capture light and make it glow in a painting.
I also love the Hudson River School of artists. Thomas Cole's The Voyage of Life is GENIUS in both paint and in storytelling.

I like Van Gogh there is something about his paintings that I find beautiful and haunting at the same time. I think I may have seen some of his paintings when I was young at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Plus his life story was also very interesting. Too bad for most of the painters, you always here they never really become famous until after they die.
The creator of the cave paintings of Lascaux in France.One of our ancestors.Believe me I thought about my answer this is no joke,for with out him none of the others would exist.
In more modern times I just can't pin one down there is simply to many to admire.It also depends on ones own taste and eye.
For me Picasso and Pollock.My choice is based upon the fact that they spun the art world around and almost recreated it.
Final answer the caveman.
i could never pick only one. They all have their different styles and there is something incredible about each. Rubens is one I'll have to look up though
